dbx 160AD Compressor/Limiter dbx 160AD Compressor/Limiter

Since its introduction in the mid 1970's, the dbx160 series has been a very popular compressor. Solid construction, foolproof operation, great sound, at-a-glance metering and a bulletproof output stage, all contributed to its popularity with musicians, recording studios, consultants, installers and broadcast media production people.

The 160AD from dbx is the latest generation of this family of compressor/limiters. It features switch-selectable OverEasy and Hard Knee compression curves, along with extremely wide-ranging threshold, ratio and output controls. True RMS level detection provides the most natural-sounding dynamics processing available, from subtle compression to "brick wall" peak limiting. The user can choose low ratios and OverEasy compression to transparently smooth out fluctuating vocal and instrumental levels, or use the Hard Knee compression and high ratios for absolute protection against overload distortion in digital recording, P.A. systems and broadcast signals.

The 160AD's unique "INFINITY +" inverse-compression mode actually decreases the audio output level below unity gain when the input exceeds threshold, a real lifesaver for correcting overbearing vocal choruses and controlling runaway house mix levels. A detector input can be used with an equalizer for de-essing sibilant vocals and selectively smoothing out boomy notes on acoustic guitar and bass. Two units can be stereo-coupled to process an entire mix or a stereo microphone setup, without shifting the left/right image.

Key Features • Single channel compressor/limiter with detector input • OverEasy or classic hard knee compression with program dependent attack and release times • Exclusive Infinity+ compression allows negative compression • Strappable with another 160A for true RMS stereo summing operation • Dual RMS LED display monitors input or output and gain reduction over a wide range

dbx 166XL Compressor/Limiter/Gate dbx 166XL Compressor/Limiter/Gate

Most compressor/gates provide less than musical compression, coupled with gating that swallows transients- or closes early, cutting off decay and reverb tails. The superb engineering in the 166XL ensures that both its compression and gating provide versatility and excellent sonic performance in situations where other compressor/gates typically produce undesirable processing artifacts.

When using the 166XL's Attack and Release controls, artists and engineers will find that the center settings deliver classic dbx compression, while the full control range produces voicings that extend from slow "leveling" to aggressive "peak" limiting. The 166XL's advanced gate circuitry uses a completely new, program-dependent timing algorithm to produce ultra-smooth release characteristics- even with complex signals, such as voice or reverb decays. dbx engineers went on to take advantage of the wide dynamic range and high precision of the dbx V1 VCA to design in an extra-wide threshold range and ensure top gating performance for each application.

Separate precision LED displays for gain reduction, compression threshold and gate threshold allow quick, accurate setup, while the 166XL's intuitive operation lets users easily smooth uneven levels, add sustain to guitars, squash drums or tighten up mixes. In Stereo couple mode, the Channel 1 controls become Master controls, and Channel 2 follows precisely to ensure a rock solid stereo image- even with high amounts of compression, through True RMS Power Summing. Professionals and newcomers alike will find that the 166XL sets up rapidly and musically the first time it is used, especially with the Auto attack and release function. Advanced applications are now easy, with the 166XL's full sidechain functionality, and the ability to use either hard knee or OverEasy compression algorithms. Add to this already impressive list of features the venerable PeakStop limiter, and you've got a strong finisher, every time.

The dbx 166XL processor is the result of an intensive engineering and product development effort aimed at taking advantage of the latest and best advances in manufacturing technology to deliver true dbx audio performance and reliability to our customers at the lowest possible cost. The 166XL puts a completely new level of compressor/gate performance within everyone's reach.

dbx 234XL Stereo 2/3 Way Crossover dbx 234XL Stereo 2/3 Way Crossover

  • XLR differentially balanced ins and outs
  • Mode switches for mono 4-way or stereo 2-way/3-way operation
  • Low frequency summed (subwoofer) output
  • x10 range switch on both channels
  • 40Hz high pass (low cut) filter both channels
  • Phase reverse switch on all outputs
  • Individual level controls on all band outputs
  • 24dB per octave Linkwitz-Riley filters (the professional standard)
  • Stereo/Mono status LEDs indicate the selected mode
  • dbx2 year parts and labor as standard
  • CSA NRTL/C approved
  • CE compliant

    From dbx:

"Let's take a look at the construction features of the dbx 234XL. At first glance you'll notice the units are great looking, and as you turn the controls something else becomes apparent; these units are extremely well built. The controls exude great precision, and the feel is a solid "click". Also, when you open the box, you won't find the external power supply that accompanies most processors in this price range. That's because we know how difficult external powersupplies can be to work with and even though it costs a little more we put the high quality power supply right in the unit. All the inputs and outputs are balanced XLR connectors that are screwed directly to the chassis. Thisconnecting of the jacks insures that even if someone steps on a cable plugged into the unit, it's not going to tear up the circuit board inside. All dbx crossovers feature Linkwitz-Riley 24dB per octave filters, the professional standard, but then again, what did you expect?

"Via two switches on the back panel you first select whether you're operating your system in stereo 2-way, 3-way or mono 4-way. Another back panel switch also selects whether or not you want to mono sum the LF (subwoofer) out. (Most systems that use a subwoofer are mono summed to take advantage of amplifier power and because low frequencies are non-directional.) Back panel switches allow you to select the range of the crossover frequencies individually for both channels. The crossover frequency controls have a green LED that indicates the X10 switch on the back panel is activated (we wouldn't make you check the switch position on the back every time you wonder where it's set). All these switches are on the back panel because it could be disastrous if you were to change them mid-program. On the front panel you'll notice there are LEDs that indicate whether the unit is in mono or stereo mode. Each channel has an input gain control for proper level setting. There's a recessed 40 Hz low cut (HPF) on each channel to remove unwanted low frequencies. Both the low and high outputs on each channel have a gain control ranging from -infinity to +6dB, to allow muting of individual outputs and for level matching. Also, these outputs each have phase reverse switches that'll help get you out of a bind without having to reconfigure your system. These phase reverse switches may be internally reconfigured as mute switches.

"You'll get great performance, all the features you'd expect from a professional product, and the knowledge that you're buying a processor from the people that have been producing the world's finest processors for over 20 years. The technology that made us famous brings you a dbx crossover which has been tested to the highest professional standards at a price that's just too low to admit!"

Actually that last part isn't true. We admit the price right here.

    From dbx:

"Most compressor/gates provide less than musical compression, coupled with gating that swallows transients- or closes early, cutting off decay and reverb tails. The superb engineering in the 266XL ensures that both its compression and gating provide versatility and excellent sonic performance in situations where other compressor/gates typically produce undesirable processing artifacts. When using the 266XL's AutoDynamic Attack and Release controls, artists and engineers will find that the center settings deliver classic dbx compression, while the full control range produces voicings that extend from slow "leveling" to aggressive "peak" limiting.

The Auto Dynamic circuitry continuously adjusts the actual attack and release times to optimally match the program material. Since users aren't restricted to using the Attack and Release controls only in "peak" operation, they can tailor the response of the 266XL for individual tracks, mixed program material, special effects or system protection. As a result, production studios can use the versatile 266XL to replace multiple "single-purpose" limiters while sound reinforcement users can standardize on the 266XL for all of their applications.

The 266XL's advanced gate circuitry uses a completely new, program-dependent timing algorithm to produce ultra-smooth release characteristics- even with complex signals, such as voice or reverb decays. dbx engineers went on to take advantage of the wide dynamic range and high precision of the dbx VCA to design in an extra-wide threshold range and ensure top gating performance for each application.

In Stereo couple mode, the Channel 1 controls become Master controls, and Channel 2 follows precisely to ensure a rock solid stereo image- even with high amounts of compression. Presonus BlueTube Dual Path Preamp Presonus BlueTube Dual Path Preamp

The new BLUETUBE DP two channel microphone/instrument preamplifier with Dual Path technology delivers the best of both worlds offering a solid state preamplifier stage and a tube preamplifier stage in each channel. This new Dual Path feature delivers the most flexible preamplifier in its price range by delivering both fat warm tube tone or invisible solid state transparency. The BLUETUBE DP replaces the original award-winning BLUETUBE as PreSonus' most affordable two-channel microphone/instrument preamplifier. Each channel of the BLUETUBE DP includes a -20dB pad, polarity reverse, 80Hz filter, and +48v phantom power. Front panel controls include solid state GAIN control and switchable on/off TUBE DRIVE. When the TUBE DRIVE is clicked off, the tube preamplifier stage is bypassed delivering ultra-quiet and transparent preamplification. The front panel also includes illuminated analog VU meters for each channel for easy visual monitoring.

The BLUETUBE DP's inputs are professional-quality Neutrik Combo connectors for inputting both XLR and 1/4" TS sources. Outputs include both XLR and TS jacks allowing for ultimate flexibility.

The PreSonus BLUETUBE Dual Path is great for enhancing all types of microphones including condensors, dynamics and ribbons, as well as instruments including keyboards, acoustic and electric guitars and bass. The BLUETUBE DP is the perfect front-end preamplifier for any project studio delivering a wide range of sounds and tonality all at an amazingly affordable price.
